FAQ

- What mask do I need according to my situation?

Depending on the degree of protection and the context of use, you can find different types of masks. Therefore, these are the two key factors to consider when choosing a mask.

As a rule,  cloth hygienic or surgical masks are recommended in public places to prevent the spread of a virus in times of high contagion.

  • Children

Healthy children from three years old can wear masks, and these should be adjusted to their size. There are three sizes segmented in age bands for children between 3 and 12 years old.

The placement and removal of the mask on the little ones should be supervised by an adult to ensure that it is done correctly.

In the case of children suspected or positive in COVID, they should wear surgical and hygienic masks. If possible, these should be certified by a health institution.

- Types of Masks

  • Hygienic masks (UBIK & cloth masks)

Hygienic masks are not sanitary products, they cover the nose, mouth and chin and hold on the head or ears. They are recommended to the general public. They retain the particles of a possible contagion to prevent the spread of the virus. It is advisable to use them in situations where there may be possible contagion, such as in supermarkets, pharmacies or public transport. It is important not to reuse these if they are not suitable for it. These masks are intended for healthy people.

Many institutions recommend the use of cloth masks with the aim of reducing the transmission of viruses in society, especially in those who are asymptomatic carriers. In addition, it is important that, in case of a shortage of PPE masks, you do not acquire these if you are not a medical professional or belong to a high-risk population group, because by doing so you deprive healthcare professionals and workers who need them from access to masks.

  • Surgical masks

These face masks are rectangular and are made of thin materials of a thickness similar to the one of paper. Their fit is not very strong and should cover the nose, mouth and chin. Surgical masks are disposable and reuse is not recommended, so you should get rid of them as soon as you have finished their first use.

If used properly, they prevent a significant portion of the particles that we eject into droplets from reaching other people. These types of masks are used with potentially infected or suspicious patients. In peaks of contagion they are also recommended to the general population.

  • PPE Masks

Masks considered to be PPE (personal protective equipment) are those intended to protect people from inhalation of harmful substances. These substances are not only viruses, but also particles that turn out to be toxic, for example, by their chemical composition. This type of mask must comply with strict regulations, and according to it several types are established:

FFP1: has low efficiency (78% minimum filtration efficiency, 22% leakage to the outside.)

FFP2: with an average efficiency 92% minimum filtration efficiency, 8% leakage to the outside.

FFP3: with high efficiency. 98% minimum filtration efficiency, 2% leakage to the outside

N95: 95% minimum filtration efficiency, 5% leakage to the outside

On the other hand, those that have a specific filter for particles are divided into P1, P2 and P3.

 - How do you put a mask on?

The most important thing when handling a mask is to wash your hands thoroughly before and after using them and to handle exclusively the ties or ear loops. The only exception is stiff edge for adjusting the nose, if any. Therefore:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Put it on by touching only the ear loops
  • Remove it by touching only the ear loops
  • Discard it in a plastic bag and wash your hands again

It is very important that you do not touch the outer fabric of the mask, for example, with your hands to scratch yourself. If you do, remember to wash your hands immediately and do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth. This way you avoid touching material that may be contaminated.

  1. Clean your hands with soap and water for 40-60 seconds or hand sanitizer before touching the mask.
  2. Touch only the ties, elastic bands or ear loops.
  3. Make sure the mask is completely secure. Make sure it covers your nose and mouth and there are no gaps between your skin and the mask.
  4. If the mask has ear loops, put one loop around each ear.
  5. Mold or pinch the stiff edge to the shape of your nose.
  6. Clean your hands before removing your mask
  7. Touch only the ear loops while removing it
  8. Throw the mask in the trash inside a plastic bag. Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

What are UBIK masks made of?

UBIK masks are multi-layered and made of antibacterial polyester. As you know, the quality of a mask depends largely on the material it is made of. This antibacterial polyester meets ISO certifications against agents such as heat or cold, machine washing at 70 degrees, ironing, light or sweating. The certification as a barrier fabric is issued by AFNOR, the French Association for Standardisation, which has drawn up fabric requirements for the manufacture of masks. (AFNOR SPEC S76-001:2020)

- Can you turn the mask inside out?

No, it is not advisable and it does not increase its effectiveness. In the case of UBIK cloth masks, once washed both sides have the same protection.

- Is it safe to clean it in the microwave?

There is no data confirming in any way the effectiveness of the microwave in cleaning a face mask. We will always recommend a standard washing machine as a safe and simple method to clean your mask.

- What about DIY masks?

Its effectiveness depends largely on its fit and fabric. For example, it is known that high-density cotton is able to filter some particles. DIY or fabric masks depend on their quality and fit. Avoid unnecessary gaps and make sure the size is suitable for children.

- And others like, for example, snorkel masks?

It is not advisable to use other types of barriers intended for various uses such as diving equipment.

- Does a hygienic mask without a certified guarantee protect me?

Hygienic masks serve primarily to protect others. The fact that it is approved means that it has had extra supervision by a health agency.

- Can children use adult masks?

Children should wear masks of their size to ensure effective protection and fit.

- What if you wear a mask with the wrong size?

The use of an excessively large or small mask can reduce its effectiveness. It is important that the masks are not loosely tied, cover mouth and nose and do not leave important gaps.

The only exception is children who test positive in COVID, who have been advised to perform a surgical mask of adult size (always older than three years).

- Can non-reusable face masks be washed?

Masks that are not reusable should be discarded after use, as they can lose their shape or effectiveness if washed.

- How do you wash reusable masks?

Each manufacturer must specify a washing conditions. This is very important in the case of masks, as it is essential that they preserve their properties.

- How many times can I wash the mask?

UBIK masks keep their properties intact for 100 washes.
